About Ann

Ann FarmerI spent my early years in the suburbs of Glasgow and went to the University of Glasgow where I obtained a BSc with Honours in Chemistry. I taught Chemistry and General Science for 4 years at Bearsden Academy before leaving to be a full-time Mum.

When my husband changed his job in 1987, we moved to Edinburgh. I started work as a searcher in 1988, once all three of my children were at school. Although I had never even heard of this job before I applied for it, I soon discovered that I enjoyed it. After a few years of doing routine searching, I moved on to investigative work and built this up from a low number of requests to the much greater demand that now exists for this service.

Since setting up on my own, I have been able to diversify and put my own distinctive style on my searches, which I know is much appreciated by the many clients who keep coming back for more. Although many solicitors are now carrying out simple searches themselves, especially in the Land Register, the Sasines Register remains a mystery to most people and this is where my expertise is vital, although the Land Register can still throw up problems for the inexperienced.

I believe that my scientific background has given me a logical, analytical training with a capacity for the lateral thinking necessary for investigative searching. I get a real feeling of "eureka" out of finally finding a title after many hours of searching. Although there are some boring bits, I can honestly say that I really enjoy my job and hope to keep helping people to find out who owns that land.

I hold a Certificate of Professional Development in Conveyancing Practice and also in Advanced Conveyancing Practice, both awarded by the University of Strathclyde.
